“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” Hebrews 11:1
What is it exactly?
Faith is described as a flavor in a candy store. Which faith do you prefer?
Faith is expressed as a means to an end.
I have faith my favorite team will win tonight.
Faith is measured in quantities.
If he just had more faith, he could have been healed.
Faith is considered a necessity to some. You gotta have faith.
Faith is totally toxic to others.
I want nothing to do with “the faith.”
Faith is imprinted on paintings, crafts, and trivets.
I sure feel warm and fuzzy when I see that word.
Faith is mandated in a marriage ceremony.
I promise to love you and be faithful.
Faith is considered the backbone of Christianity. Without faith it’s impossible to please God.
The writer of Hebrews was sold out to the concept. Matter of fact, he dedicates a whole entire chapter to it. He not only describes faith, but he creates a monumental showcase to display the journeys of men and women who demonstrate faith in remarkable ways. Hall of Fames are reserved for the best of the best.
Football Hall of Fame
You name it, there’s an accolade for it.
The only written Hall of Fame recorded in the Bible revolves around Faith.
Let’s take a closer look at why this author chooses to highlight faith over love, joy, peace, or hope. All of which could be counted as notably significant.
I want you to catch one more translation of this verse.
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 [NKJV]
Significant Key: Faith = substance
– a setting or placing under; substructure; foundation
The definition paints faith as a substance or foundation something is placed on. What’s placed on this platform? Things hoped for.
Faith is not hope.
Things hoped for rest on faith.
Faith serves as a foundation for things hoped for.
When building a house, the foundation is so important. A foundation sets the stage for the entire structure. Without a firm foundation, one crack, can significantly shift the house’s position causing much damage throughout, including an all-out collapse.
Instrumental. Important. Vital. Essential. Critical.
Because everything you hope for in your life rests on your faith,
faith is the platform portraying your hopes.
E vide nce [elegchos]
– a proof; that by which a thing
is proofed or tested
Secondly, faith serves as a proof or evidence of things unseen with the human eye. Invisible realities.
Faith is a substance and an evidence
This is where faith in God gets sticky for some. “How can I believe in a God I can’t see?” Simple: You look at the evidence.
Though I can’t see oxygen, when it’s removed I can’t breathe. Though I can’t see gravity, when it’s removed everything floats. Though I can’t see an aspirin at work in my body, when it’s deposited my pain is lifted.
The proof lends credibility.
I don’t have to see it or understand it.
Actually, it’s more adventurous to not see it or understand it. I simply look for the evidence or proof.
Magic tricks fascinate every age. Why? Because we just can’t figure out how they work. The rabbit appears in the hat, but there’s no possible way it should. AND when the mystery’s revealed, the trick loses a certain excitement. Admit it, once you know “the secret method,” the intrigue and thrill is gone.
