While Cross Style’s School of Practical Ministry (SPM) teaches a variety of courses and subjects, everything taught at SPM focuses on four foundational areas for life and ministry:
1. Saturation Bible Study
Saturation is the foundation for our studies at SPM. Saturation is not mere Bible Study but soaking, absorbing, and being permeated with Scripture; it is the interaction between us and the Written and Living Word (Scripture and Jesus). It is not an academic pursuit but an opportunity for intimacy. Every class taught at SPM comes from the foundation of saturation in the Word of God. It is our desire that saturation becomes central to your life.
While the concept goes by a variety of names, sourcing is simply allowing the Spirit of Jesus to come and “source” one’s life. Unlike in the Old Testament where God was “out there somewhere” and I had to live within myself to perform and accomplish; the shift into the New Testament is that of the outside God getting inside and living His life in and through me. Christianity is not about what I can do and pull-off but rather what Jesus wants to do through me. I am to live in surrender and response to the movement and flow of Jesus in my life.
3. Servant-Hearted Living
The Christian life is not about you. It is about Jesus and how He wants to meet the needs of others through your life. We are called to live the “Cross Style” – the continual roll up your sleeves; pour your life out; bleed, suffer, and die style of life. We are not supposed to focus upon ourselves but the world around us. As Jesus lives His life through our own, we find our calling that of a servant to a dying and needy world.
4. Practical Ministry
We are not interested in merely giving you an academic education and sending you on your way. Practical ministry is at the core of our program. While you will spend time in training, classes, and academics, a large portion of your time will be going out into the community and putting into practice what you are learning. Hands-on learning and experience, in often difficult and stretching ministry, takes the forefront of the educational process. In so doing, you will:
- have practical ministry experience before you graduate
- learn in a safe ministry environment where you can process, ask questions, make mistakes, and grow
- be stretched in a variety of ministry settings that may not be familiar to you
- change countless lives through purposeful interaction and ministry
- see the practical outflow of your time in the Word, class time, and study
- experience the thrill when Jesus gives you words to say and moves in the circumstances of daily ministry
