I am a Jesus pusher!!! How can I know for sure I am hearing (akouo) the voice of Jesus? The answer is clearly stated at the end of Peter’s sermon (Acts 2:14-39). Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). The subject of this sentence is “they.” But Luke identifies them as the ones who heard this. The ones who were in the act of hearing is the subject. The verb of the sentence is “were cut (katanusso).” “Kata” is a prefix intensifying the root word. It means “from.” “Nusso” means “to prick or pierce.” This is the only time this word is used in the New Testament. “Piercing through” naturally takes place when one is “hearing” (akouo).
I cannot be intimate with Jesus, hearing His voice, without constantly being changed. If I want to remain as I am, I can be religious, but I must not hear Him. If I want to live undisturbed and unchanged, I must not be open to His voice. His very presence will pierce my heart; His light will confront my darkness. I will be shaken at the core of my existence when He speaks and I hear. This is the price of knowing Him.
But why should I resist? Every change He brings is for my benefit! He only speaks what is good for me. He is bent on making me like Him. Oh the wonder of being intimate with Him; He is changing me into his likeness. “Dear Jesus, pierce the depth of my being; leave nothing undisturbed. I am listening!” I am a Jesus pusher!!!
