I am a Jesus pusher!!! “What shall we do?” This question is asked three times in response to John the Baptist’s preaching (Luke 3:10, 12, 14). In the conversion of Saul of Tarsus it is used twice (Acts 9:6; 22:10). A jailor is shaken into giving this response (Acts 16:30). The same question is asked by the Jews of the Dispersion (Acts 2:37). There is a distinction between those in Luke’s account and those in the Book of Acts. When John the Baptist responded to this question, he required them to carry out specific activities. He gave instructions which applied to their particular situation. After Pentecost, the answer is always in terms of response.
The Greek word (poieo) translated do suggests the answer. It points you beyond an activity one does to make things right. It is the word used when trees bear fruit. Trees do not “do” fruit; it is the process of “poieo.” Our understanding will be increased, if we translate the word as “respond.” “Doing” is a focus on oneself. “Responding” is a focus on interaction with something or someone beyond oneself. Relationship with Jesus is never a “doing;” it is always a “responding.”
I want intimacy with Jesus! I do not want a list of activities to accomplish. I want to embrace His person. I want to know Him on the level of the heart. I want to live responding to His every desire, flowing in His presence and fellowshipping with His person. I am a Jesus pusher!!!
