I am a Jesus pusher!!! Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men,” (Matthew 4:19). The element of CONTINUALLY is present in this call. The promise of Jesus is one of being engaged continually in evangelism. Jesus boldly presents the call to evangelism to two disciples. There is no mincing of words, no allurement with rewards, and no glamorizing the task. There is no time element attached. It is not an assignment for a period of time or until retirement. In fact, it is not a call to do something, but to become something. The continuity of evangelism is stressed.
Day by day, week after week, month upon month, and year after year His Spirit will actively flow through us for this purpose. Up to this time, they embraced Jesus as the Messiah. They followed Him as time would allow in their busy fishing schedule. Things are going to change, if they are to remain in relationship with Him. Matthew’s account places emphasis on the future tense. Jesus said, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). Luke’s account instead of the future indicative stresses the duration aspect of the call. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men” (Luke 5:10). “Catching men” will be the continuing involvement of our life. This is a result of the flow of Jesus within the believer. What a privilege!
