I am a Jesus pusher!!! The Sermon on the Mount is in no way a doctrinal dissertation. It is certainly not an organized, systematic belief system. Jesus does not prescribe an adjusted form of outward observance. He did not come to establish a university of higher education. He came to found a Kingdom! He does not propose a system, methodology, or structure of technique. He institutes an intimate fellowship. All disciples, both the original and those to follow, discovered doctrinal teaching which sprang out of fellowship with Jesus. This happened in the early disciples and it happens in those who are disciples now. He reveals Himself and they believe; when we believe, we learn the truth connected with Him; the truth springs out of Him. The seed of truth comes from the Sower who sowed the seed, the word of the Kingdom (Matthew 13:19), in our hearts. It comes from His Person!
In Matthew 5, Jesus presents a “state of being” not a moral system with rules to obey. Now, in Matthew 6, Jesus presents the practical application of living in this state. At the beginning (Matthew 5), he shifts our focus from a list of rules to the wonder of actually being in the Kingdom. Now how do we live beyond a mere observance of some outward commandments (Matthew 6)? We live in Him! Jesus is our total focus and motivation. No wonder I am a Jesus pusher!!!
