I am a Jesus pusher!!! “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,” (Matthew 5:3). Lets review! “Blessed” must be understood as “congratulations” or “you are fortunate.” The Speaker of the word sees you in an ideal position. The opening word of the Sermon on the Mount congratulates us on having arrived! We are not on a journey to the Kingdom of Heaven; we have arrived in the Kingdom of Heaven. This is not a road filled with attempts, discipline, struggles, and trying until we reach our final destination. We begin our journey in the Kingdom. Jesus is the Way; He is the Goal. When we are in Him, we are on the Way; therefore, we have already arrived.
“The poor” is the state of being for those within the Kingdom of Heaven. The Greek word (ptochos) translated poor is specific. The word refers to any person reduced to total destitution or helplessness. Jesus pinpoints the exact location of the destitution. It is in spirit. The spirit of man is the principle of life causing him to live. It is the spiritual entity in man and focuses on the inner aspect that determines the response of man’s living. Man’s spirit causes his attitude, reactions, and perspective of life. This is the location of man’s helplessness. Man did not become helpless; he has always been helpless. This was God’s design for the existence of man at creation. At the core of man’s life, he is to depend entirely on God. God and man will be partners in the production of man’s life. As God sources man in his spirit, man will be the demonstration of the Spirit of God. Man’s helplessness is not a negative; it is a positive. I am created to be filled with Jesus.
