I am a Jesus pusher!!! The first Beatitude ends on a positive note. “For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus repeats this statement using the same grammar in the last Beatitude (Matthew 5:10). At first glance, you might think the Kingdom of Heaven is a reward or the result of being poor in spirit. The way to achieve or enter into the Kingdom is to become helpless. The Greek word “hoti,” translated for, does not refer to results. It portrays the idea of “for this reason. Jesus says the helpless, the poor in spirit, are blessed `because of their involvement in the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven is not theirs because they are helpless. The helpless are fortunate because of their involvement in the Kingdom of Heaven.
The subject of this statement is the kingdom of heaven. The main verb is the Greek word “esti,” translated is. It is the third person, singular, present indicative of “eimi,” which is “I am.” There is coupled with the Greek word “autos,” translated theirs. Jesus is not saying that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the poor in spirit. This word, “autos,” has a stronger emphasis on the pronoun than normal. It is often used as a reflective pronoun such as herself, himself, or themselves. The antecedent of this pronoun is used in the poor in spirit. This pronoun is a genitive, which shows relationship between nouns. The idea is that the poor in spirit (theirs) is (equals) the kingdom of heaven.
The Kingdom of Heaven is not merely the presence of God. The Kingdom of Heaven consists of God and man in this embrace. When helpless man experiences the filling of the Spirit of Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven is reality. The Kingdom is the unity or oneness of the embrace between Jesus and you.
