I am a Jesus pusher!!! “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” (Matthew 5:3). “Poor” is a translation of the Greek word “ptochos.” It comes from a verb meaning “to shrink, cower, or cringe.” It presents a picture of total destitution of all life’s necessities. This condition is located in spirit. This is not a result of sin or anything we have done. God created us this way! Jesus is our source! A glove is not criticized because it is helpless; it is made that way. It finds strength and life when indwelt by the hand. “Blessed are those who mourn” (Matthew 5:4). When we recognize our helplessness, our mourning becomes a proper response. In lamenting our destitution we respond to the source. How open will we be to Jesus? The extent of our mourning is determined by the depth of our realized helplessness.
Once we embrace our total helplessness, mourning is spontaneous. We do not decide to mourn; we do not produce mourning. It is not something to do or to seek. It can be forgotten; no one needs to concentrate on it. The issue is not “do we mourn?” The issue is poor in spirit. Do we embrace our helplessness? Our state is proven by our failures. The circumstances of our daily lives repeatedly prove our condition. Surely we are poor in spirit; therefore, we mourn. Mourning is launched by our helplessness. If we refuse to embrace our helplessness, we cannot mourn. Don’t miss His resource for your life; don’t miss Jesus. I am a Jesus pusher!!!
