I am a Jesus pusher!!! “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted,” (Matthew 5:4). In order to be honest with our text, we must highlight the continual state of mourning. The Greek word “penthountes,” translated mourn, is a participle in the nominative case. This means it is a verb functioning as an adjective. It gives content to the subject of the sentence. The subject becomes “the mourning ones.” This participle is in the present tense. In Greek grammar this highlights continual action. In other words, there is to be a constancy of mourning based on the constancy of the poverty. God creates us in a state of poverty; therefore we live in a state of mourning.
The mourning is a product of embracing our helplessness. In establishing the connection between these two elements, the consistency is also established. If we were created in a state of consistent helplessness, would not our mourning also be consistent? Since God intended us to be helpless in order that He might source us, the recognition of this poverty is the core of our submission. Mourning is the fiber of our response that allows Jesus to live through us! The secret to all the wonder found in Christianity is discovered in this combination. What Jesus longs to produce in and through our lives is only experienced through this interaction of poverty and mourning. Everyone is poor in spirit but may not recognize it. Those who embrace it will mourn. However, this does not guarantee comfort. Our passage must be seen in light of the One who speaks these words! Jesus is our solution! I am a Jesus pusher!!!
