I am a Jesus pusher!!! “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). The Greek word ”parakaleo,” translated shall be comforted, is the verb form of the noun for one name of the Holy Spirit (Paraclete). Jesus told the disciples, “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Parakletos), that He may abide with you forever” (John 14:16). This title is given to the Holy Spirit four times in this discourse of Jesus (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; and 16:7). It is used one other time in John’s writings. My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate (Parakletos) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1). In these verses John refers to Jesus as “The Comforter.”
The basic verb “parakaleo” means “to summon, to call to one’s side, to call for help, to appeal, to request, to encourage, to comfort, or to cheer up.” The ministry of the Spirit of Jesus can easily be described as “The Comforter.” He brings conviction to our state of helplessness. Without His direct ministry to our inner spirit we will never realize our poverty in spirit and we will never mourn. Even the ability to cry out in mourning over our helpless state only happens in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are helpless; we are poverty stricken. Thus, the Spirit of Jesus reveals our helplessness and enables us to mourn over our condition. Then He becomes the answer to our need. Our mourning delights our soul as we find life in the midst of death. Our complete helplessness becomes the substance of our strength, for He embraces us! The Spirit of Jesus has come!
