I am a Jesus pusher!!! Jesus viewed the fulfillment of the Beatitudes in the experience of persecution (Matthew 5:10-12). The virtues of the Beatitudes are seen clearly and expressed most forcibly in the crucifixion. The cross style is only experienced in relationship with Jesus. Cross style is impossible to accomplish outside of intimacy with Him. In its essence it is not something we do; it is the way we think, exist, and function. If we develop a list of activities to achieve the status of cross style, we automatically violate the nature of the cross. If the master washing the disciples’ feet is viewed as a cross style activity, there are a variety of subjects to be addressed. How many feet are required to meet the condition? How thoroughly must the feet be washed? How often should I wash feet? Asking these questions violates the heart of “cross style.”
Paul speaks of the fellowship of His sufferings. He explains that this fellowship of sufferings brings me into being conformed to His death (Philippians 3:10). The Greek word “koinonia,” translated fellowship, portrays the idea of partnership. It originally portrayed the picture of a government official giving business advice. We become “business partners.” Paul proclaimed this in the mystery of his statement, “I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church” (Colossians 1:24). How can my sufferings mingle with His to redeem the world? It is a mystery, but He has included me. I am a Jesus pusher!!!
