I am a Jesus pusher!!! Does the basic premise of Christianity repulse you? Losing your life is the opposite thought process of the world of persecution. But there is a reasonable attraction to the style of the cross. One would think in losing our lives we become the same, all simply tasting like salt. However, in losing my life to Jesus He so saturates me with His presence that I finally become who I was really meant to be. Instead of diminishing, I flourish. Instead of dying, I live; instead of losing, I win! How can it be? It is the principle of “salt.” Without hesitation, we call every individual to the cross. There is no compromise, soft peddling, or pampering in this Gospel. There is no “trying,” “experimentation,” or “let us see how it works out.” This is an unconditional call of the cross to become “salt.”
Although this is true about becoming “salt,” our passage is about being “salt.” We cannot fathom how we could experience becoming “salt” and then hesitate in being “salt.” We dwell in a state of death where life is found. Paul expounded this truth when he said, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). This is another description of the Kingdom of Heaven; my earthen vessel helplessness is filled with the treasure of “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). The purpose of this treasure is not so my earthen vessel can be glorified, but that everyone around me will experience “the excellence of the power” of God. I am to become “salt” that He might be seen. I am a Jesus pusher!!!
