I am a Jesus pusher!!! “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned” (Matthew 5:13)? There are several indications in the passage of the permanency of the Kingdom call. This is not a statement by Jesus proving we can never lose our salvation. That particular issue is not being discussed in this passage. Even a suggestion of that subject is a violation of the passage. However, Jesus is calling His disciples to remain steadfast in a state of being, the Kingdom of Heaven, “the salt of the earth.” Do not waver from such a state!
Jesus opens with, “You are the salt of the earth.” The verb is in the present tense and the indicative mood. The present tense in the Greek language points to the present moment with continuous action in every present moment as it approaches. This speaks to consistently maintaining the condition of being salt. The indicative mood of the verb forms the basis of an imperative. In fact, both statements, “You are the salt of the earth” and “You are the light of the world” are thrust upon the disciples without justification as to “why” or “how.” He simply says, “This is how you are to be!” We must not ask, “How can I do this?” You and I are helpless (Matthew 5:3). Jesus does not propose something you are to achieve. He describes the result of the merger of our helplessness and His nature! I must have Him! I am a Jesus pusher!!!
