I am a Jesus pusher!!! “Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house” (Matthew 5:15).There are several dilemmas in the passage we need to address. They might be called assumptions. The verses concerning “light” leave one with great-unanswered questions, which the author assumes you can answer with an understanding of Jewish culture and tradition. The Old Testament gives a significant background for the presentation. In our verses, there is no attempt to tell us from where the light comes. What is the exact source of the light? How is the light maintained? The presentation is so focused on the physical, and yet this is not the discussion at all!
In searching the Scriptures, we can discover light’s imagery from the beginning to the end, where the writers use it both literally and figuratively. The very beginning of creation in the Biblical narrative demonstrates the importance of “light.” Physical light springs forth as the first created thing (Genesis 1:3-4). At the other end of the Biblical account, the light of God obliterates all traces of darkness. “There shall be no night there. They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light” (Revelation 22:5). There are nearly two hundred references too light between these two references at the beginning and end of the Scriptures. “Light” is seen as powerful and complex imagery in the Scriptures. Jesus is the source of the light!! I am a Jesus pusher!!!
