I am a Jesus pusher!!! The first appearance of “light” (phos) in the Scriptures is physical. The very basis of all physical life on earth is “light.” How important was “light” to the created physical world? It is the first recorded event! Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:3-4). This event is the power of existence springing from nonexistence! Suddenly there is a powerful illuminating, life-giving thing called “light.”
Biblical writers are meticulous in highlighting that God makes physical light consistently. The pagan religions deify the heavenly bodies because of their light-giving properties. However, in the Scriptures, physical light is always separated from its Creator. It is an indicator, measure, or sign of the Divine Creator instead of the Creator Himself. The psalmist demanded the sun, moon, stars, and the heavens of the heavens must praise our God. The reason is quite simple: “For He commanded and they were created” (Psalms 148:5). God is the source and creator of “light.” How can I be the “light of the world?” The answer is the premise of Jesus’ sermon. Jesus must fill our helplessness with Himself! Others must see Jesus in us! Any attempt to be the source of the light is to destroy the light itself. We must be Jesus pushers!!!
