I am a Jesus pusher!!! “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). We must view “your good works” in light of the context of the Beatitudes. We are helpless; how could we possibly produce one single “good work?” There is no ownership of any good work. Therefore, the reference to “your” is not ownership but refers to works related to who we are. They refer to “works” demonstrated through us, although we are not the source of them. “Good” is a translation of the Greek word “kalos.” This word portrays the idea of attractive or beautiful. “Good works” are constructive, not destructive; they are positive, not negative. They attract people, not repel people. The Greek word “ergon,” translated as “works,” often refers to the result or object of employment. It is the performance and result of the activity. If we are helpless, there is a resource moving within us that is doing something through us that is simply beyond us.
The context of these “good works” is the Beatitudes. We demonstrate meekness within our lives. It affects the entire physical world around us (Matthew 5:5). We begin to experience fullness or completeness (Matthew 5:6). Mercy is both experienced and exchanged with others (Matthew 5:7). Holiness becomes the state of our existence, and it allows an intimacy with God (Matthew 5:8). Peace is both possession of our inner life and a by-product of our outward circumstances (Matthew 5:9). Even persecution cannot sidetrack us from what He provides in our lives (Matthew 5:10). These are the “good works” that have become ours! They are Him! We are Jesus pushers!!!
