I am a Jesus pusher!!! I have sat in judgment on the disciples only to discover I am as guilty. They consistently focused on the Kingdom for personal benefit. It was not a lack of belief in Jesus. They left all to follow Him. Their involvement in ministry activity was full-time. Jesus sent them out after giving “them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease” (Matthew 10:1). On the surface, we could all applaud the ministry. However, there seemed to be a major flaw! Even while ministering to others, they continually focused on themselves. When Jesus suggested a ministry of “bleed, suffer and die,” they were not receptive. The moment He injected the cross into the equation, “Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him” (Matthew 16:22). The whole concept of pouring your life out for others, never thinking about yourself, and embracing your world did not fit the focus for their lives.
E. Stanley Jones told of holding a chapel service in a mental institution for women. Upon viewing the facility, he noticed room after room well equipped with sewing machines. The ladies were making beautiful items for their personal use. Dr. Jones excitedly expressed the possibility of involving the ladies in repairing garments to give to homeless families. The director of the institution exclaimed, “Oh no! That is not possible. The ladies would not be interested in sewing for others.” Dr. Jones inquired, “Why? They have the time, skill, and sewing equipment.” The director replied, “You do not understand why they are here. If they could do something for someone else, they would not be in this place!” To the degree we are self-focused, to that degree we are insane! We must merge with Jesus and have His focus! I am a Jesus pusher!!!
