I am a Jesus pusher! Whatever the level of God’s fatherhood in the Old Testament, the New Covenant in Jesus far exceeds. It is not merely an expansion of the concept of God’s fatherhood; it is the establishment of a relationship between God and man not known. The very expression of this in Jesus’ preaching disturbed the leaders of Israel to the extent of plotting murder. Jesus said to them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working” (John 5:17). The reaction of the Jews demonstrates their understanding of the content of the Fatherhood of God. “Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God” (John 5:18). Jesus used expressions relating to father and son that were offensive and foreign to the Jews. The name of God was so sacred it could not be pronounced even in reading the Old Testament Scriptures. The Holy of Holies contained God; He was behind a thick veil. Jesus used the language of familiarity. “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does, (John 5:19-20). The greatness of the Father fills the helpless man, supplying the resource needed for the life of the son! The change is unbelievable! I am a Jesus pusher!
