I am a Jesus Pusher! “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17). The focus of His statement is an explanation of His relationship with the Scriptures. We do not worship a book called the Bible. We do not think it contains magical powers we can release by rubbing or waving it. Yet the Written Word, the Scriptures, when invaded and fulfilled (completed) by the Living Word, Jesus, becomes an organism. The Bible comes to life with His presence and becomes the speaking of God to us! This connection is essential in the relationship Jesus wants with us.
I am helpless (poor in spirit); He fills me with His presence. If this is all I have, how will I know Him? He will reveal Himself to me, but I will interpret His revelation through my helplessness. The flaws of my past and the scars of my life’s failures shape Jesus into someone He is not. Some have gone to the extreme in their interpretation of Jesus. Others have reduced Him to their puppet. How can I keep this from happening in my life? I must embrace the Living Word through the Written Word. As Jesus completes the Scriptures in my life, I see Him as He really is! If I simply experience His presence without the Scriptures, I will create and shape Him as I desire. If I only have the Scriptures, I will develop a legalistic, academic Jesus of my own learning. I need Jesus fulfilling the Scriptures in my life. I am a Jesus Pusher!
