I am a Jesus Pusher! The New Covenant is the infilling of the Spirit of Jesus in the believer, giving us the mind of Christ through the Scriptures. Any deviation from the Scriptures is a deviation from the mind of Christ, His indwelt presence. Any disagreement from the mind of Christ is a disagreement with the Scriptures. No one can divide them; they are the same! In this passage, Jesus calls us to share His mind. The Scriptures are an expression of the mind of Christ. Think of the wonder of being indwelt with the mind of Christ as you hold what He says in your hand, the Scriptures. He reveals His truth to you. His habits, pattern of thought, and “oral traditions” are now yours.
The last section of this chapter is powerful (Matthew 5:21-48). Our paragraph, “The Fulfillment of the Kingdom, Acknowledged” (Matthew 5:17-20), introduces this last section. In verse twenty and throughout the previous section, the resounding statement is, “But I say to you.” Jesus gives us His opinion, but His opinion is the same as the Scriptures. He brings us back to the Scriptures. If we join the perspective of Jesus’ mind, we will join the Scriptures. The Scriptures must be more important than what we have “made up” about the Scriptures. To push Jesus, the Person is to push the Scriptures, His Word! I am a Jesus Pusher!
