I am a Jesus pusher! The writer of the Book of Hebrews makes an interesting statement. In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away (Hebrews 8:13). On first consideration, you might think this writer is speaking of the Old Testament as “obsolete,” “growing old,” and “ready to vanish away.” However, the chapter and even this verse focus on the covenants, not the Scriptures. He distinctly refers to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt (Hebrews 8:9). The writer quotes God as saying, “I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah” (Hebrews 8:8). Although the Hebrew writer focuses on covenants, Jesus focuses on the Old Testament Scriptures (Law or the Prophets). The inadequacy of the Old Covenant is evident; the necessity of the New Covenant is absolute. But Jesus highlights the plan of God as seen in the Scriptures, of which these covenants are simply a part. Nothing is “obsolete,” “growing old,” or “ready to vanish away” about the plan of God as revealed in the Scriptures. He fully accomplished the Law and the Prophets. He fulfilled every symbol and ceremony in the temple structure regarding Himself. He was the only man who adequately kept the law (Hebrews 4:15). Now He wants to merge with me and do the same through me! I am a Jesus Pusher!
