I am a Jesus pusher!!! “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder,’. . . But I say to you” (Matthew 5:21-22). Jesus does not dismiss the importance of the physical. He highlights the source of such action. John, in his first epistle, exposed the Gnostics of his hour. They were antinomian in their teaching. This thought produced an unscriptural dualism that divorced matter from spirit. Irredeemably corrupted was the state of all matter or physical. The obvious conclusion of this thought is a dualistic world. The Gnostics believed it does not matter what you do in the physical because it is only the spirit of man that matters. They practiced their body passions without inhibition so their soul might shine brighter in comparison. The Gnostics proposed, “Give to the flesh the things of the flesh and to the spirit the things of the spirit.”
Jesus brings us back to the Scriptural view! In human life, we cannot separate the physical and spiritual, and we must maintain the inner action of these two vital areas. What goes on in one area deeply affects what happens in another area. Our spiritual attitude affects our physical activity, as our physical activity affects our spiritual attitude. However, do not be tricked into the perspective that physical activity is the only measure of the spiritual attitude. We must not judge murder by its physical action. The attitude of the heart births the physical actions. The Kingdom person merges with the nature of God and gives expression to the holiness of God. Jesus and the believer have formed a new creature!
