I am a Jesus pusher!!! “Raca” and “You Fool!” were the two most common terms of abuse in Jesus’ day (Matthew 5:22). The insult was regarded as harmless. We hear these insulting words daily in our culture: “You idiot,” “You moron,” “You imbecile,” and more. If we confront the offender for using such language, their answer would be, “I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just upset.” Even in the church, we do not regard such statements as sin requiring the judgment of hellfire. On the other hand, those words may not be the ones used, but the feelings behind those words are often present. They are feelings of viewing another person as worthless, insignificant, or “not worth my time.” Often, we have reduced people to a function, the sin of slavery. The strong young slave has greater value than the older, weaker slave. Their value is determined by how well they function. The people of talent in the church have more value than those who seem to contribute less. Although we may not speak demeaning words, the attitude is the same. Jesus proposed one perspective. We can only properly understand this commandment (Matthew 5:22) when we allow it to speak against every expression of human alienation and hostility toward another individual. We must see this demeaning and degrading attitude in light of the judgment of God (death). It is not the mind of Christ! I am a Jesus pusher!!!
