I am a Jesus pusher!!! The opening verse reflects on the traditional view of “those of old” (Matthew 5:27), mentioned once and contained in one verse. Then Jesus gives His view, which is equated with the view of the Scriptures, and thus the view of God’s heart. However, it is only one verse in length (Matthew 5:28). The following two verses give us the bulk of the material (Matthew 5:29-30). These bold statements call for radical action and leave an imprint on the reader. That is serious! “Those of old” focused on the physical act of adultery, while Jesus focused on the lust of the heart. Whether a physical action or a fantasy of the heart does not make a difference in severity, there may be a fantasy of the heart without the physical act. Still, there is never a physical act without the fantasy. The problem is the severity of the involvement. Jesus does not advocate the removal of the body parts involved in the sexual act. He speaks about the “eye” and the “right hand.” Jesus suggests these things as the avenue to fantasy. Everything we have talked about thus far involves our eternal destiny. Our eternal destiny is not about good people compared to bad people or moral compared to immoral. Family, raising children, and the proper role of the husband and wife are not highlighted here. Jesus ended this section of His discourse with the subject of “hell.” Your sexuality controls your eternal destiny because it expresses “who you are,” not “what you do.” The call of God is not that you abstain from specific physical activities but that you embrace His nature through the framework of your masculinity or femininity. Merging with Jesus is the answer. I am a Jesus pusher!!!
